Sojourner Truth Walk 2018

Thanks to everyone who helped make the 6th annual Sojourner Truth Walk on May 5, 2018 an amazing success! 200 people walked together in the streets spreading positive images of girls’ and women’s leadership and highlighting social justice activists from Sojourner Truth to the present. We met our goal and raised $30,000 to send 80 Philly girls to Camp Sojourner this summer and offer free arts and leadership programs year-round!

Below are images throughout the day: gathering in Clark Park for registration, face painting, and sign-making; walking and drumming through West Philly (Camp Sojo drummers led by Latreice Bronson/ Drum Like a Lady); female activist history displays including this year’s addition to our timeline, Tarana Burke and the #Metoo movement; crossing the finish line at the Calvary Center for Community and Culture with Unidos da Filadelfia playing samba music while onlookers cheered; eating lunch together and hearing about the work of local groups Women Against Abuse, Our City Our Schools,
Philadelphia Community Bail Fund, Sankofa Community Farm, and ArtWell (doing a joint project with Camp Sojourner.)

Thanks to Kris Eden and Ted Goldman for taking these pictures! Also, many thanks to Cassie O’Connell for her help with designing the newest history display, and to artist John Dyess for permission to use his illustration of Sojourner Truth for our walk logo. Thank you to our many volunteers who helped keep things moving throughout the day and in the preceding weeks.

We hope you will join us next year!
