Sojourner Truth Walk 2019
Thank you to everyone who helped make the 7th annual Sojourner Truth Walk on May 4 an amazing success! 200 people walked together in the streets of West Philly chanting, drumming, and spreading positive images of girls’ and women’s leadership. We met our goal and raised $30,000 to send 80 girls to Camp Sojourner this summer and offer free arts and leadership programs year-round! Check out our website for a full photo gallery of the walk.
Below are photos of the day: gathering in Clark Park for registration, face painting, sign-making, and an inspiring kick-off speech by this year’s activist timeline awardee Cristina Martinez. (Thanks to her interpreter, Carlos José Pérez Sámano!) Walking and drumming through West Philly led by Camp Sojo drummers and chanters (thanks to Latreice Bronson/ Drum Like a Lady). Unidos da Filadelfia played samba music at the finish line at Calvary while onlookers cheered. Lunch was generously donated by local restaurants and camp supporters. Our Pillar of Strength displayed names of women and girls who were honored by walkers. We heard about the work of important local social justice groups: HIAS, Coalición Fortaleza Latina, and ArtWell. We also heard from City Councilmember Helen Gym about the importance of working for justice in this political moment.
Thanks to Kris Eden, Conrad Erb, and Rich Wexler for taking event photos! Also, many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make the day possible, including Cassie O’Connell for her help with designing the newest history display. Also, thanks to artist John Dyess for permission to use his illustration of Sojourner Truth for our walk logo.
We hope you can join us next year!
